What is HDR photography ?

First, HDR stands for High Dynamic Range (and not High Definition Realism – although I think it should).  It’s basically a technique in photography to capture as much as possible the range of lighting that your natural eye sees.  For example, when you are inside a room with a window, your eyes can easily see both the room, and the outside of the window quite easily.  If you were to take a picture with a camera or mobile phone, most likely you will see the inside of the room, while the outside window would appear as an overbright frame – aka blown out in expoure.

When I first started taking photos, I got photos just like that.  The inside was fine, but the outside was too bright.  Or vice versa – the outside looked great, but the room was very dark.  Now with HDR, we can get as close as possible to what the natural eye sees.

Depending on your camera, it typically has about 13 to 15 EV range.  On the other hand, our human eye can see 20 EV or stops.
